Historic Sites in Lynchburg
Lynchburg is home to many sites related to the the War Between the States. The Battle for Lynchburg between forces commanded by Major General Jubal A. Early (C.S.) and General David Hunter (U.S.) left the city with remnants of earthworks formed for it's defense. Due to it's strategic location in Virginia and the quartermaster depots, railroad junctions and hospitals, Lynchburg became a target of the Union military.
Lynchburg also produced several generals and
after the war became the last home to others. Those generals born here
were: Samuel Garland, Jr., Robert E. Rodes, John Echols and John Holmes Smith
